A number of ‘older’ NXT names were reportedly close to also being let go by WWE during the recent wave of releases.
On November 4, WWE released 18 in-ring talents, including the likes of NXT’s Ember Moon and Franky Monet.
As per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, approximately 10 more names were in ‘strong discussion’ of being released. These names included veteran NXT talent in their 30s that have not been featured often on TV recently. Danny Burch and Timothy Thatcher were named as talents who were almost cut.
Burch hasn’t wrestled since the August 24 NXT, before the reboot. He and his tag partner, Oney Lorcan, were attacked by Ridge Holland and Pete Dunne following the match, which aired on September 7. Lorcan was released by WWE during the latest round of cuts.
Thatcher last wrestled at the August 23 taping, losing to Ridge Holland. After the bout, which aired the next day, NXT announced that Thatcher was ‘out indefinitely‘.
Following the brand reboot on September 14, NXT now focuses on younger and bigger stars, showcasing former independent names less. WWE President Nick Khan recently stated that he has been happy with the new direction of NXT so far.
