Plans for WWE’s first event of 2022 were thrown into disarray at the eleventh hour last night (January 1), when WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns was removed from the WWE Day 1 pay-per-view (premium live event) following a positive COVID-19 test.
The show was not without Bloodline representation however, as the Usos still competed on the show, defeating the New Day in the opening match to retain the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
Jimmy & Jey Uso spoke with Sports Illustrated following last night’s show, where they commented on their cousin missing the show due to a positive COVID-19 test.
Jey said:
“It felt off not having the Tribal Chief around, this match was for him. We represented, and he’s going to be OK. He’s home resting, and maybe playing some Call of Duty. We’re going to see him back soon.”
Jimmy then added:
“We opened the show, and we’re so used to seeing The Big Uce close the show. This pandemic is crazy, and all we want is for him to be safe and take care of himself.”
The Usos retained their championships in the opening match after pinning Kofi Kingston with the 3-D. Both Bubba Ray & D-Von Dudley have reacted to the Usos using their legendary finishing move.
Reigns’ absence from the show led to WWE changing plans with Brock Lesnar, who was added to the WWE Championship four-way match between Big E, Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens and Bobby Lashley. The Beast would pin Big E to capture his ninth world title in WWE.
We here at WrestleTalk wish Roman a full and complete recovery from the virus.
