When a wrestler signs a contract, there will be endless different clauses stating what they can and can’t do, and clauses about what happens if they get injured.
Typically, if a WWE star gets injured, WWE has the right to freeze a contract while the wrestler is unable to perform, and then the time spent injured will be shoved onto the end of that person’s contract.
For example, if you signed a three-year contract with WWE in January 2022, and then were injured for six months, instead of your contract expiring in January 2025, it would expire in July 2025.
Interestingly, it appears AEW has the same clause in many of its wrestlers’ contracts, as Dave Meltzer explained in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
He wrote:
If you are wondering if when guys are out of action if AEW can extend their contract like WWE does, their contracts do allow for that and it has happened.
Meltzer didn’t mention which AEW stars may have had their contracts extended as a result of injury, but significant stars like Kenny Omega and CM Punk have spent a lot of time out injured this year, so it will be interesting to see whether they are two of the stars affected by this clause.
