Following a warning that Fox via DirecTV was at risk of losing content, including WWE SmackDown, an update on talks has emerged.
After Fox issued an onscreen warning across some of its channels that, from midnight December 2, viewers could lose access to some of their “favorite Fox programming”, Deadline has provided an update to the negotiations between Fox and DirecTV.
Deadline reports that Fox Corp and DirecTV have agreed a multi-year carriage renewal.
Per the report:
“The new agreement covers FS1, FS2, Big Ten Network, Fox Deportes, Fox Soccer Plus, as well as retransmission consent for local Fox Television Stations across DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, and U-verse.”
With the deadline passing on December 2, a short-term extension was put into place to allow both parties to continue working on the deal.
As Deadline states:
“The talks coincided with a number of high-profile sporting events being carried by Fox Sports, including NFL and college football games and soccer’s World Cup.”
WWE SmackDown airs live on Fox in the US on Friday nights, although the most recent episode aired on FS1.
It is part of a five year deal with WWE that started in October 2019.
DirecTV is one of the USA’s largest pay-TV operators, with an audience of more than thirteen million households.
