NJPW’s Mercedes Mone has provided an injury update that suggests she may have had surgery for a leg injury.
At NJPW Resurgence, Willow Nightingale defeated Mercedes Mone to become the first NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion.
During the match which took place on May 21, Mone suffered an ankle injury before the finish.
Following the match, it was revealed that the original plan would have seen Mone become the NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion.
As previously reported, Mone herself called for the end of the match and called an audible on the finish when she realized something went wrong physically, at that time only known to be a leg/foot injury.
It was further reported that New Japan Pro Wrestling was under the impression that the injury to Mone was a severe sprain without a break, but those close to Mercedes have said that there’s definitely a sprain and the fear of a break.
It has also been previously reported that had been discussion of Mone having a match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, although the leg injury has called the plans into doubt.
AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door takes place on Sunday, June 25 in Toronto, Canada.
On June 11, 2023, Mone shared a photo to her Instagram Story that suggests she may have recently undergone surgery for her injury.
In the photo, Mone has shared the caption:
“Six days out”
As can be seen from the image below, her leg is heavily bandaged and elevated.
