GUNTHER has become the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion in history, breaking Honky Tonk Man’s record.
On the September 4 episode of WWE Raw, GUNTHER defeated Chad Gable in the show’s main event, retaining the champion and securing his championship reign.
Today marks the 455 day of GUNTHER’s reign which began on June 10, 2022 on WWE SmackDown in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with the defeated of Ricochet.
455 days surpasses the record claimed by Honky Tonk Man for his reign, which states as being 454 days.
As previously noted, while the Honky Tonk Man technically held the gold for 454 days, WWE previously established that they only recognise his reign as 453 days long due to the title change airing on tape delay.
Triple H has commented on GUNTHER’s record breaking achievement, tweeting:
“Defining his own legacy. And this is just the beginning…
“Congratulations to @Gunther_AUT on making history as the longest-reigning #ICChampion EVER.”
Since his move to the main roster on April 8, GUNTHER has suffered only one defeat, at the hands of Chad Gable by coun tout on the August 21 episode of WWE Raw.
Signing with WWE in 2019, GUNTHER has also held the WWE United Kingdom Championship having competed initially in NXT UK before being transferred to NXT in January 2022.
Sheamus has recently mocked GUNTHER’s Intercontinental Championship reign, continuing his ribbing on social media.
