This week’s SmackDown saw the WWE Backlash 2024 card bolstered significantly with two new matches announced bringing the total card to a total of five bouts altogether.
While WWE Premium Live Event’s in the Triple H era have typically featured five or six bouts, there are a number of rivalries ongoing in WWE right now that warrant a big match at Backlash.
So, five could easily become six or seven by the time WWE gets to Lyon, France on May 4.
So with that said here are four potential new additions to the match card for WWE Backlash 2024.
4. Sami Zayn (c) VS. Bronson Reed – Intercontinental Championship
WWE Backlash will amazingly be the first PLE since WrestleMania 37 in April 2021 that the Intercontinental Championship has been defended in a match not featuring The Ring General GUNTHER.
A baffling stat that not only shows how little stock Vince McMahon placed in the workhorse championship towards the end of his creative run, but also just how dominant The Austrian was.
From June 10, 2022 to April 6 2024, GUNTHER dominated WWE’s mid-card – knocking back opponent after opponent with matches that frequently outshone anything else on the show.
New champion Sami Zayn obviously has the capability to do just that with his reign, with things getting off to a hot start with his first defence against Chad Gable on April 15’s Raw.
While Gable is the long-term target, as has become apparent to Sami he certainly can’t be overlooking the man that defeated him on route to WrestleMania 40 – Bronson Reed.
I would imagine Zayn would be a hit with the French crowd due to being a Montreal, QC native – so getting this match on the card should be priority.
