8. Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe – Lockdown 2008
From a business perspective, the rivalry between Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle was TNA’s best storyline in their history. The two managed to put on matches that were believable and easy to invest in. The buyrates for their pay per views are the highest in company history and their matches never disappointed.
While their match at Genesis 2006 lead to the single highest buyrate in company history, we have gone with their Lockdown match instead. This was a classic cage match. Neither man ever attempted to escape the cage to win, but rather they were interested in proving they were better than the other. The match had a strong MMA vibe with both men struggling to grapple each other and lock in submission holds.
As the climax of their rivalry, Samoa Joe finally managed to pin Kurt Angle and win his only TNA Heavyweight Championship.
