The news that Roman Reigns was going to be out indefinitely while battling leukaemia hit the WWE fan base like a hammer blow.
For all the audience enjoyed giving Vince McMahon’s ‘chosen one’ a hard time, once the reality of his situation became apparent all that bitterness and jadedness melted away. Fans were genuinely devastated about the news.
It seems WWE did not get the memo.
Rather than handling the news delicately with kid gloves, the promotion opted to shamelessly exploit Roman’s illness in a quest for ratings and heat.
As bad as Dean Ambrose turning on Seth Rollins on “this night of all nights” was, that was just the beginning. In a promo several weeks later Ambrose said the Shield were going to pay for their past sins and noted, “Just look at Roman.”
Ambrose then suggested that Roman’s illness was somehow karma for his sins and that he now had to answer to “the big man upstairs”. It was a step to far.
