10 Will Ospreay Matches You HAVE TO Watch

7. Will Ospreay vs. Kota Ibushi – Wrestle Kingdom 13

In 2018, Ospreay began teasing a move to the heavyweight division. He developed an interest in the NEVER Openweight Championship and at Wrestle Kingdom 13 he got his shot at the title against Kota Ibushi. This was one of the best opening matches in history and one of the biggest moments of Ospreay’s career.

It was not a surprise that these two had incredible chemistry together but they contributed to one of the best cards in New Japan history. Ospreay’s ascent to the heavyweight scene would take a little longer but this was a fantastic first step.

6. Will Ospreay vs. Hiromu Takahashi – Wrestle Kingdom 14 Day One

Will Ospreay had conquered the junior division by the time Wrestle Kingdom 14 arrived. He had run out of challengers and proven himself to be the best junior heavyweight in the world. All that was left was the returning Hiromu Takahashi. Hiromu had been on the shelf with a broken neck for a year and a half and finally returned to reclaim the title he never lost.

This was a rare time Ospreay worked more like a heel as the crowd was solidly behind the returning Hiromu. There was some nervousness surrounding Hiromu’s neck but that was quickly dispelled. This was arguably the best match of either man’s career but a monumental moment in the progression of Ospreay’s career.

5. Will Ospreay vs. Marty Scurll – Sakura Genesis 2018

In life there are guarantees. Death, taxes, and Scurll beats Ospreay. At least, that was until Sakura Genesis. Their rivalry together dated back years to their time on the British scene. New Japan has always appreciated long-term storytelling which has led to rivalries from other promotions carrying over to their company.

This was the match where Will smashed the back of his head on the ring apron while attempting a Spanish Fly. While he was in great pain afterward, he was fine in the grand scheme of things. That makes this much easier to watch as Ospreay finally overcame his greatest rival.

4. Will Ospreay vs. The Amazing Red – Super J Cup 2019

From his greatest rival to perhaps his greatest inspiration. When the Super J Cup was announced in 2019 the biggest surprise was the return of The Amazing Red. Immediately, the focus was put on his first-round match with Will Ospreay. This was a mouthwatering match for most, and a chance to face a hero for Ospreay.

This was another one of Ospreay’s heel matches as the crowd loved Red dearly. Red had not been on a stage this large in a long time but he put on his working shoes and tore the house down. You could tell this match meant a lot to Will who was finally getting to work with an icon. While this would have been even bigger in a Best of the Super Junior tournament, it was a special moment to see these two work together.
