Home nation hero Davey Boy Smith’s first defence of the new European title on home soil in front of his family and friends was supposed to be a great homecoming moment for the decorated Brit. Instead it turned into a nightmare.
Caught in the middle of the Bret Hart-Vince McMahon-Shawn Michaels power play triangle behind the scenes, Bulldog was the unfortunate victim of politics.
McMahon, having previously told Davey that he was going over (which caused Davey to dedicate the match to his dying sister in an interview) changed his mind at the last minute as preemptive damage limitation should contract talks with Hart go awry (which they did).
Davey was unable to tell his family of the change of plans, leaving his sister in floods of tears when he passed out to a Michaels figure four leglock.
The Birmingham crowd were not happy either. Furious that the hated Michaels had dethroned their hero, they peppered the ring with garbage and were on the verge of rioting. Fortunately the situation was calmed before it got out of control but for a moment it looked like the WWF had a full-scale revolt on their hands.
