Absent AEW star pitches record-setting championship reign on return: two Pillars could collide

Having not graced an AEW ring since June of this year, one of the Four Pillars is eyeing a return and a record-setting championship reign.

Sammy Guevara was last seen on the June 6 episode of AEW Collision, teaming with Dralistico and Rush in a loss for La Faccion Ingobernable against The Conglomeration (Kyle O’Reilly, Orange Cassidy, & Roderick Strong).

With reports that Guevara had removed AEW from his Twitter bio (despite it apparently not featuring there in the first place), Tony Khan would dismiss the suggestion that the All Elite Original was on his way out of the company.

Active in CMLL and more recently ROH, Guevara is teasing a potential return, targeting Darby Allin and the TNT Championship:

Record-setting TNT Champion

Responding to a video posted on the fifth anniversary of his first TNT Championship reign, Guevara would post to Twitter:

“5 years ago today, the first of 3 reigns.

“Now give me Darby.

“I’ll whoop his ass and become the first-ever 4x TNT Champion.

“Put me up to bat. I won’t miss, @AEW.”

Allin, Guevara, Wardlow and Cody Rhodes have all held the TNT Championship on three occasions. With Allin as the current champion, Guevara absent, and Rhodes signed to WWE, Wardlow’s return was recently teased during AEW All Out.

Of the three, Allin would need to lose the title and recapture it to secure a four-time reign, while Wardlow and Guevara just have to beat Allin.

Three-way at WrestleDream on October 17, anyone?

The Pillars Collide

MJF, Jack Perry, Sammy Guevara and Darby Allin are considered the Four Pillars of AEW, and all faced each other at Double or Nothing in 2023.

Their relationship has been a fractious one, with each forging a different past in AEW. For MJF, he is a three-time AEW World Champion, a title also held by Allin. Guevara and Perry are yet to hold the top title, although it was revealed as an objective for the latter after he re-signed with the company.

It’s unlikely that Perry or MJF will pivot towards the TNT Championship, leaving just two of the pillars to potentially fight it out.

The curious case of Sammy Guevara

As fans approach the fourth month of Guevara’s absence, it does raise the question as to why he is being kept off television screens.

Tony Khan, in the previously mentioned report, suggested that visa issues for Beast Mortos may have been a factor in the reason why Guevara isn’t on Dynamite or Collision, yet the ‘Spanish God’ has proven that he is a star who can stand on his own, without a faction or teammate.

In a post on Twitter dated September 18, Guevara shared a photo showing that he’s very much in ring-ready shape, with the comment reading “All I can do is stay ready”, suggesting that his absence isn’t driven by his own hand.

Alongside Kip Sabian, Sammy Guevara had the first match in AEW history, with both stars seemingly in a holding pattern when it comes to their futures.
