Tony Khan Addresses Sammy Guevara’s AEW Status Amid Potential Departure Speculation

An update has emerged on the status of former AEW TNT Champion Sammy Guevara following speculation regarding his future.

Sammy Guevara has been absent from AEW television since early June of this year, although has competed over in CMLL later that month.

With fans noticing that AEW was not in Guevara’s Twitter bio, rumors emerged online that the star could be on his way out of the company he has called home since 2019.

Later coverage of his status has noted that Guevara seemingly didn’t have AEW in his bio to begin with, a topic that Wrestling Observer’s Bryan Alvarez recently touched upon while stating that the star’s contract has not expired, nor has he been released.

Speaking on the AEW Redemption pre-show media call, which was shared by Fightful, Tony Khan shared an update on Guevara’s status that sheds some light on why he hasn’t been on AEW television, saying:

“I thought it was unusual that people said that there was a change in Sammy’s status because nothing has changed.

“Sammy’s done well. He’s wrestling in Ring of Honor more often. He’s done some good things in AEW, and, as one half of the ROH World Tag Team Champions, had appeared in AEW as part of AEW.

“It wasn’t Sammy’s fault (that) Beast Mortos’ visa had been jammed up for a very long time and because I really like Sammy and Beast Mortos, I had gone to CMLL and said “they’re great champions and they’ve gone very well for me. I think they’ll be very good for CMLL” and they got booked in Arena Mexico, defending the championships, made a few defenses and lost the championships to Mascara Dorada and Mistico.

“As I understand it, when Sammy changed his (Twitter) bio, I don’t think Sammy ever had AEW in his bio in the first place. So, I don’t think it was any negative change. I got a nice message from Sammy saying he wasn’t to do anything bad and that he loves AEW and I believe that.

“Sammy has been a good wrestler for us in AEW and ROH. He’s a great talent and a very good person, so I don’t think he meant to do anything. It seemed like people jumped on him for something he didn’t even do. Certainly, just messing around with a Twitter bio, it’s pretty amazing how people would jump to conclusions, but also jump on him. In my opinion, in this case, probably unfairly.”

Visa issues have seemingly impacted a number of international AEW stars recently, with a past report noting that Gabe Kidd was unable to compete at Forbidden Door as he “can’t get in the United States for a while”.

Recapturing The Momentum

Sammy Guevara and Beast Mortos may no longer be ROH World Tag Team Champions, but opportunity exists for the pairing to recapture lost momentum during their absence.

For Guevara, his last AEW appearance saw him team with Dralistico & Rush in a losing effort for La Faccion Ingobernable against The Conglomeration (Kyle O’Reilly, Orange Cassidy & Roderick Strong), with that match taking place on the June 6 episode of Collision.

By contrast, Beast Mortos last competed on AEW television back in March of this year, once again on an episode of Collision, teaming with Dralistico & Rush in a victory for LFI over Alpha Zo, Dom Kubrick & Lucas Riley.

Of the pairing, it’s easy to argue that Guevara is the star most closely linked with the history of AEW, featuring in the first singles match at the inaugural episode of Dynamite in 2019 and being considered one of the ‘four pillars’, alongside MJF, Darby Allin and Jack Perry.

Khan noting that ““It wasn’t Sammy’s fault (that) Beast Mortos’ visa had been jammed up for a very long time suggests that there were perhaps plans to use them more on AEW television, although there’s an argument to be made that Guevara could continue to feature in the same way that The Dogs have despite the absence of Gabe Kidd.
