After suffering a defeat at the hands of GUNTHER on the March 2 episode of WWE Raw, a star hopes for a rematch.
The WWE Raw match would see GUNTHER take on Dragon Lee, with fans getting the briefest glimpse of the star without a mask.
With an unmasking being seen as disrespectful to Lucha Libre culture, Dragon Lee would reflect on the moment during an appearance on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, saying:
“I know, it’s a culture. This is for respect of our culture; you have to always cover your face. You will not see any wrestler in Mexico showing the face, but that was tough.”
Dragon Lee would praise GUNTHER for the match, stating that he wants to wrestle the star again, stating:
“Actually, was some of my best matches I ever had. Gunther is a great wrestler, but I need to wrestle with him again, because after that, I didn’t have a chance to wrestle him again. I hope I can get my second opportunity; it means so much.
“When he takes off my mask, it’s not respectful. Yes, many pictures on social media, but it’s not my real face, because I was covered. You can’t see my face. I’m handsome, no worries!”
With WWE SummerSlam approaching August 1 & 2, GUNTHER will face SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis, following weeks of antagonism.

The Mask Is Sacred
For GUNTHER, “the mat is sacred”, and the same is very much true of the mask when it comes to Lucha Libre wrestling.
Dragon Lee is entirely accurate when he says that masked stars keep their faces hidden. Despite a period of being without a mask in WCW, Rey Mysterio has continued his career as a masked star and enjoys a level of popularity that is yet to be equalled.
Recently, AAA saw a mask vs. mask match between El Grande American and The Original El Grande Americano. While the OG did unmask, with Chad Gable going on to deliver a passionate promo to the fans in Mexico, it’s worth noting that neither star was native to the region, with the fans no less engaged with the feud.
Whether it’s on-screen or backstage, it’s rare for masked wrestlers to be recorded with their face on show. For it to happen in the ring is unfortunate, though slip-ups happen, and there’s always an effort to keep the identity secret on the off-chance that the mask comes off.
