Former WWE Star Issues Statement After Release, Reveals New Name

A WWE star has issued a statement after being released from their contract earlier this year, ahead of a potential return to the ring.

Zelina Vega was one of a number of stars, alongside her real-life husband, Aleister Black, to part ways with the company in April of this year.

On her Thea Trinidad YouTube channel, the former WWE star issued a statement, hinting at her plans for the future which reads:

“Thank you for allowing me to entertain you as Zelina Vega.

“I hope you join me for this new chapter.. it will be my best.”

The video was accompanied by footage of a young child taking in a Rey Mysterio match and later the World Trade Center attack in 2001.

It’s then revealed that the child is a “young” Trinidad, as she joins the girl on a journey through a house and her career, commenting:

“You have to do this by yourself.”

With doors being locked on her own past, the past iterations of Vega, one of which sees a cameo from AEW’s Andrade – who was once aligned with Vega in WWE – can be seen reacting with a mix of sadness and apparent concern for what they are witnessing.

Vega then celebrates her Women’s United States Championship win, with that reflection being contrasted by some personal moments.

Finally, Trinidad walks in to see Vega and Aleister Black, before she walks towards a new door, a bright light and a hint at what’s to come with a “coming soon” graphic, followed by an “X” as the video ends.

As can be seen from the thumbnail of the video, we get an indication of the star’s new in-ring name of ‘Xelina’, with Trinidad filing a trademark application for that term recently.

Released from her contract on April 24, a potential 90-day non-compete clause would expire on July 23.

A Second Missed Opportunity

Having been released for the first time back in November 2020, Zelina Vega would return to WWE in July of the following year with “unfinished business“.

A former Women’s Tag Team Champion, Vega would become WWE Women’s United States Champion, being the second star to hold the title.

Vega would make her mark at WWE Backlash in 2023, challenging Rhea Ripley in a failed attempt to become SmackDown Women’s Champion at the first PLE in Puerto Rico since early 2005.

In the period before her WWE departure, Vega would be teamed with her husband as an onscreen pairing, recapturing a combination that had been planned before Black was released for the first time in 2021.

Addressing the recent union, Black would indicate how he say it working on screen, something that fans would only get a taste of in the short time they were together on WWE television.

A former member of the LWO, there was potential for the star to gain traction over in AAA, a tantilizing prospect after she turned heel in October of last year. The idea of a darkly twisted Black and Vega in Mexico would have been an intriguing one.

Xelina’s popularity will no doubt continue as she charts her new journey and there’s every chance that, at some point in the future, she, alongside Black, could make another return to WWE.
