Sammy Guevara AEW Status Update

An update has emerged on Sammy Guevara, who hasn’t been seen on AEW television since early June of this year.

CMLL Viernes Espectacular on June 26 saw Sammy Guevara & The Beast Mortos lose the ROH World Tag Team Championship to El Sky Team (Mascara Dorada & Mistico).

For Guevara, this capped of a month that also saw, to date, his last appearance in AEW, teaming with Dralistico & Rush as La Faccion Ingobernable, facing The Conglomoration (Kyle O’Reilly, Orange Cassidy & Roderick Strong) in a failed effort to capture the World Trios Championship.

With no sign of Guevara on AEW television, fans noticed that he had removed references to AEW from his bio on Twitter, with it also being revealed that Tay Melo, his real-life wife, had requested her release last year, only for that to be rejected.

Details of Guevara’s status has now emerged, thanks to Wrestling Observer Live, with Bryan Alvarez noting that he had been told that Guevara’s bio never featured an AEW reference and that the star is still seemingly under contract, saying:

“As it turns out his contract has not expired. He’s not been released. Nothing has changed.

“I was told that AEW had never been in his bio.”

Guevara may be absent from AEW television, but he remains active on his YouTube channel, with his most recent vlog being released on July 14.

The Breakout Star Can Still Stand Out

A joint record holder as a three-time TNT Champion (with Wardlow and Cody Rhodes being the others), Sammy Guevara had the first singles match in AEW history, losing to Kip Sabian at the inaugural Double or Nothing in 2019.

Named Breakout Star in the AEW Dynamite Awards of 2022, Guevara is one of the “four pillars” of the company, alongside MJF, Darby Allin and Jack Perry. all names who have gone onto their own levels of success.

For Guevara, his association with Chris Jericho propelled him to new heights, seeing them team as Le Sex Gods.

Guevara’s 2024 would see the star suspended after not following concussion protocol in a match with Jeff Hardy. This wouldn’t be the first time that he had been sidelined, with inappropriate past comments about the star now known as Mercedes Mone resurfacing back in 2020.

Absent from television Guevara may be, but it doesn’t appear that there’s anything external stopping him from appearing, which could suggest that he’s just being kept off Dynamite and Collision until a new plan forms, particularly if, as Alvarez indicates, it isn’t seemingly contract related.

Just 32 years of age, at the time of writing, there’s plenty of opportunity for Guevara to surge forth with renewed intensity upon his return, wherever that may be. After all, if Jack Perry can sign a new AEW deal and set his sights on the World Championship, there’s little stopping Guevara from being utilized at that level, too.

Indeed, a feud that sees Perry and Guevara fighting for pole position as a future AEW World Champion could be a far more satisfying story to tell than just having either go directly for the title holder.
