Tomohiro Ishii pinned IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega in an instant classic.
I’m almost at a loss for words, as I feel I can’t properly do this match justice in written form. All I can say is that if you want emotional in-ring storytelling, sheer physicality, and massive crowd investment, this match had that and then some. The story they told was simple and elegant: Omega, the unbeaten dominant champion throughout this G1, cannot seem to topple the heart and determination of Tomohiro Ishii. Due to his size, the ‘Stone Pitbull’ is a natural babyface when put in the right situation. The crowd were more than willing to get behind him, because somebody needed to beat Kenny. And by God, that someone was going to be Ishii.
I what seemed like an endless barrage of suplexes, V-Triggers, and piledrivers, both men seemed determined to destroy each other. In the end, Ishii finally got a Brainbuster on Kenny to secure the three, but not without controversy. As the camera showed, Kenny had a shoulder up when the referee counted three. No doubt this will be part of the story going into Ishii’s eventual world title match.
For now though, I think it’s safe to say Dave Meltzer is gonna sprinkle five or more stars on this.
