This Day In Wrestling History – September 25

1993: WWF Champion Yokozuna pinned The Undertaker in one of the feature matches at the group’s Madison Square Garden house show. In a very curious match, heel tag champions The Quebecers beat thrown together monster heel duo Adam Bomb and Bam Bam Bigelow via count out. Jimmy Snuka wrestled (and beat) Brian Christopher on the card in another unusual match-up. The main event saw Mr. Perfect defeat Diesel via DQ.

1995: On an early episode of WCW Nitro, Alex Wright beat Disco Inferno, Kurasawa bested Sgt. Craig Pittman, Kevin Sullivan beat Randy Savage via DQ and Meng pinned Lex Luger. No match went longer than seven minutes.

1996: The Undertaker beat The British Bulldog via DQ in a rare meeting of the two in the main event of Monday Night Raw. The Smoking Gunns won the tag titles on the same show, defeating Yokozuna and Owen Hart.

2000: The Hardy Boyz beat Edge & Christian in an oft-forgotten ladder match on Raw. There were also wins for X-Pac over Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero over Val Venis and The Rock over Chris Benoit.

2000: Non-wrestler Vince Russo “accidentally” beat Booker T in a cage match to win the WCW Championship on Nitro, and the sound of the promotion circling the drain could be heard all the way across the country in Stamford. Russo, in his desperate quest to be Vince McMahon, booked the finish himself.

2002: NWA TNA’s 13th weekly pay-per-view featured some intriguing match-ups. There was plenty of entertainment on offer in the form of Amazing Red vs. Sonny Siaki, AJ Styles vs. Low Ki, Jorge Estrada vs. Kid Kash and Jerry Lynn vs. Ron Killings. The main event saw former WWF allies Road Dogg and Jeff Jarrett do battle to a DQ finish. Scott Hall and X-Pac also wrestled on the show, teaming up to defeat Brian Christopher and Elix Skipper.

2003: Former ECW star Pitbull #2 passed away from a heart attack at the age of 36.

2006: John Cena beat Lita in the main event of Raw, a no holds barred match in which Cena had one arm tied behind his back. The bout went under a minute. DX duo Shawn Michaels and Triple H defeated most of the tag teams on the roster in a gauntlet match, just for fun presumably.

2010: WWE presented Bret Hart Appreciation Night at a special Madison Square Garden house show. The Hitman even wrestled on the card, teaming with nephew David Hart Smith (British Bulldog Jr.) and Tyson Kidd to defeat Nexus trio Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel and Michael Tarver. In the main event, World Heavyweight Champion Kane beat brother The Undertaker in a street fight, which until recently was ‘Taker’s final appearance at the Garden.

2016: PROGRESS presented their biggest show of the year, the aptly titled Chapter 36: We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Room… Again at the massive O2 Academy in Brixton. In front of over 2,000 fans, Mark Haskins beat Tommy End (Aleister Black) and PROGRESS champion Marty Scurll to capture the company’s top title. There were two other title changes on the show. Rampage Brown defeated Joe Coffey to win the vacant Atlas Title and the duo of Pete Dunne and Trent Seven dropped The London Riots to win the PROGRESS tag belts. No fewer than 13 of the guys and girls that wrestled on the card have since signed with WWE.

2016: Two title changes were the highlights of NJPW Destruction In Kobe. David Finlay, Ricochet and Satoshi Kojima bested Adam Cole and The Young Bucks to win the IWGP six man belts while Tetsuya Naito dropped Michael Elgin in a cracking main event to become the NEVER Openweight Champion.

2016: Cesaro and Sheamus fought to a no contest in a cracking scrap at Clash of Champions, the final match of their best of seven series. They were forced to team up by Raw GM Mick Foley after that and the unlikely duo quickly became one of the hottest double acts on the brand as The Bar. Elsewhere on the show, Chris Jericho beat Sami Zayn in a strong match, Roman Reigns beat Rusev to win the US Title and Kevin Owens retained the Universal Title against Seth Rollins.
