2. The New Day vs. The Usos for the SmackDown Tag Team Titles – Hell in a Cell 2017
Brian Zane of Wrestling With Wregret said it best, the New Day and Usos are the modern day Edge & Christian and Hardy Boyz. Why? Because they always outdo themselves in every match that comes. Say what you want about SmackDown Live in 2017, but you can’t deny that the Usos and the New Day made for some entertaining television.
The match is extreme with the two teams using a variety of weapons and taking a lot of risks, which made for an entertaining match. I could’ve done without the instruments being used as weapons, but that does not take away from the violence of the match.
I wish that we didn’t have another title swap, but there is some emotional investment with things like Xavier Woods being hit with Kendo sticks on his chest, Woods trying to fight back with no hands, etc.. If there is any match you re-watch from last year, this one should be at the top of your list.
1. Undertaker vs. Triple with Shawn Michaels as Special Guest Referee ‘End of an Era’ – WrestleMania 28
WrestleMania 28 is one of the best WrestleManias of the modern decade. Why? This match is a big reason, as 99.9% is amazing. The only thing I didn’t like was the multitude of finisher kickouts. Everything else was so glorious.
The emotional turbulence Shawn Michaels went through with Triple H savagely beating Undertaker with a chair, the brutal spots they did with the cell, the brief DX reunion, and, of course, the emotional conclusion.
It’s a match without a dull moment and felt big, unlike, in my opinion, the imminent rematch that’s going on at Super Show-Down. But don’t let that take away from this amazing match, and everything else about it. A match that can make a referee an emotional aspect in a match deserves all the praise it gets.
