Top 10 WWE Hell in a Cell Pay-Per-View Matches

9. John Morrison vs Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship – 2009

I think the total number of abs in this match was about 81.

In 2009, it was basically Dolph Ziggler’s gimmick to try, and fail, to win the Intercontinental Championship. He faced champion Rey Mysterio in two consecutive pay-per-view matches for the belt and came up short both times, only to watch John Morrison defeat Rey on an episode of SmackDown to capture the gold. Typical.

This set up a match between the two for Hell in a Cell. Ziggler took a lot of the early stages of this match, displaying his excellent amateur wrestling ability with great mat work and vicious-looking take-downs.

Morrison’s neck was the target of most of Ziggler’s offence and it looked like the future ‘Show-Off’ was going to walk out the winner here. That was until Morrison turned the match around with, among other counters, an excellent Tilt-a-Whirl DDT that made me pop out of my seat.

Morrison eventually hit the combo of a running knee strike and Starship Pain (the coolest name for a finisher ever) to retain his title, but both of these young talents put on a great showing in this match.

A classic Intercontinental Championship match – two young workhorses who could put on an athletic, high-energy match and throw their hat into the ring as one of the next big stars of the company.

Sadly, that last part never happened, with Dolph being perpetually stuck in the upper mid-card and Morrison leaving WWE in 2011 to wrestle for every independent promotion known to man.

A solid IC title match from two of WWE’s most dependable hands; although you do have to feel sorry for Dolph, as he’s basically in the same feud now with Seth Rollins almost a decade later. Just with fewer abs.
