3. NXT North American Championship Match
Adam Cole (c) vs. Oney Lorcan

The Undisputed Era is simply made up of flat-out rock stars, flashing their gold like they own the place. They have such a commanding presence and the audience loves them despite their mischevious behavior. It really helps that all four men are incredibly talented not just in the ring but on the mic as well.

The stable basically stood in the ring and stated that they are the best, and with three belts around their collective waist, who are we to argue? The definitive leader of the group, NXT North American Champion Adam Cole, then stepped forward and graciously welcomed Oney Lorcan to come and challenge for the title. He even wanted to face his opponent alone and respectfully informed his partners that he doesn’t need their help and sent them away like the stand-up champion he is.

Now it is fair to say the Oney Lorcan (and his partner Danny Burch) rarely pick up a win on NXT TV but they are some real heavy-hitters between the ropes. We’ve seen many times in the past how intense they can get and this week’s show was no exception.

This match, although fairly short, was a firestarter with Cole strangely playing the beaten-down champion role usually reserved for babyfaces. I know he’s a crowd favorite but it’s still odd to see. Lorcan got some stiff licks in and seemed to have Cole’s number before Kyle O’Reilly came running down with a member of the medical staff, throwing up the ‘X’ signal.

This all distracted everyone long enough for Roderick Strong to hit Lorcan with a backdrop on the apron and Cole to miraculously regain the spirit to fight on. I say “fight on,” he hit the Last Shot (a vicious uncovered knee to the back of the head) on his challenger and that was that.

This bout was a great way to showcase Lorcan’s talents while playing up to the Undisputed Era’s sneaky tactics. It was simply everything you could want from a title defense where the championship is clearly not changing hands.
