3. A WWE employee showed up following a disastrous WCW pay-per-view (What Happened When)
The 1988 Royal Rumble was a firm middle-finger in the face of Jim Crockett Promotions, whose second attempt at a pay-per-view (Bunkhouse Stampede) took place the same night. The “McMeddling” wasn’t the only force dealing body blows to Crockett’s empire – there was enough friendly fire from within. The decision from Dusty Rhodes to put himself over in the namesake match didn’t sit well with many, including Tony Schiavone, as he and others apparently felt that it was the time to put the younger Lex Luger over.
As the anti-Dusty sentiment (as well as the anti-Crockett sentiment, due to Crockett believing firmly in Rhodes’ vision) grew, Schiavone recalls an uptick in frustration and resentment from the boys. As if that weren’t enough, according to Schiavone, Mean Gene Okerlund happened to be hanging out at the same bar as the WCW guys after the show (apparently very late in the night). Tensions were so high after the Bunkhouse misfire that there were those who allegedly thought that Okerlund was trying to recruit the jilted Luger to WWE, something Schiavone attributes to just “paranoia”.
