There has been a backstage update on the omission of two top stars from the vacant AEW Tag Team Championship Tournament.
Following AEW Revolution 2024 and Sting’s retirement from in-ring competition, the AEW Tag Team Titles were vacated from The Icon and Darby Allin, with a tournament being held to determine new champions.
While the bracket features many of AEW’s top teams, there is one omission that has raised some eyebrows, that being the Blackpool Combat Club’s Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli.
Despite not being the most established tandem in the division – often being featured as solo stars instead – they have been on a strong run as of late, even defeating former two-time AEW Tag Champions FTR at Revolution.
Their absence in the tournament was recently quizzed by Dave Meltzer, who revealed on Wrestling Observer Radio what he had heard within AEW regarding the decision.
Meltzer said:
“I specifically asked why they weren’t in, and there was like, no reason. They just didn’t put them in because, whatever reason – they didn’t put them in.”

Moxley and Castagnoli have not competed on AEW TV since their win at Revolution, adding to the uncertainty of the whole situation.
WrestleTalk will provide further updates as/when they become available.
