Current AEW Champion Discusses Departures Of CM Punk & Jade Cargill AEW

The AEW departures of CM Punk and Jade Cargill have been a talking point among fans of wrestling over the past few weeks.

AEW terminated CM Punk’s contracts with the company back on September 2 following an investigation into the backstage incident at AEW All In at Wembley Stadium on August 27.

Former TBS Champion Jade Cargill returned on the September 9 episode of AEW Collision, setting up a rematch with Kris Statlander for the title on last week’s Rampage.

Following that match, it was reported that Jade’s contract with the company had expired, with her expected to sign with WWE imminently.

Speaking to Newsday ahead of tonight’s AEW Grand Slam event, Statlander spoke about the departures of Punk and Cargill, and the effect they’ve had on the company.

She said:

“No matter what is going on backstage, or what people think is going on backstage, or any sort of rumor going on, my personal goal . . . is to make sure that at the end of the day, I do what I can to put on a great show. And that’s all that I can do, and I wish people that like to feed into any sort of drama or rumors could just kind of look at wrestling at a surface level and just feel like this is entertainment . . . I wish that some people would just not care so much about other stuff that doesn’t matter when it comes to the overall product.”

One of the issues Punk spoke about in regards to the AEW locker room was younger talent not taking advice from the veterans in the locker room.

When asked about taking advice from veterans, Statlander said:

“Sometimes with us being younger and stupid . . . they don’t always make the best decisions. Everybody’s going to have their own way to go about these things. For me, personally, I will welcome any advice from anyone that takes the time out of their day to help me out.”
