AEW reportedly has interest in signing former WWE Champion Sheamus after he officially became a free agent today.

Back in July, it was reported that Sheamus was set to leave WWE after almost 20 years with the company, with him being moved from the company’s roster page to it’s alumni page.

It was reported that Sheamus was asked by the company to ‘restructure’ his deal while he was out of action with injury, which was said to have been ‘swiftly declined’ by the Celtic Warrior.

Sheamus has not competed since he teamed with John Cena and Rey Mysterio on John Cena’s final Raw appearance last November, with him being reportedly cleared to return shortly before his departure was confirmed.

After the announcement of his departure, it was noted that Sheamus’ contract was officially set to expire on October 1, with him being a free agent as of today.

When Sheamus’ departure from WWE was announced, fans immediately began speculating about what could be next for him, with many discussing the potential he would have in AEW should Tony Khan have interest in signing him.

In an update from WrestleVotes Radio (subscription required), AEW does indeed have interest in signing Sheamus following his free agency, with a handful of AEW wrestlers also being favor of him joining the company.

Sheamus to AEW, how would he fit in the company?

Sheamus is not the only recently departed WWE star that has had interest from AEW, with the company reportedly likely to sign Ilja Dragunov, as well as recently signing New Level and the Motor City Machine Guns.

While Sheamus coming to AEW would open the door for a lot of exciting matches against names such as Kyle Fletcher, Konosuke Takeshita and even Ilja Dragunov himself, there is definitely concern that AEW has maybe too many wrestlers on the roster right now.

However, Sheamus also has the option of entering the tag team division after reuniting with Claudio Castagnoli if the time comes where he is struggling to feature in the singles ranks, with AEW now hosting the best tag team division in wrestling.

Sheamus brings a very physical style that fits right in with the rest of the AEW roster, the DNA of a Collision Cowboy through and through, so if he does arrive, he should do just fine for himself.
