MJF Shares Honest Thoughts On The State Of Professional Wrestling

Ahead of AEW All In: London, MJF has shared his honest thoughts on the current state of the professional wrestling business.

Now in his eleventh year as a professional wrestler, MJF signed with AEW in January 2019, renewing his contract in the so-called “Bidding War of 2024“.

In a recent Bleacher Report interview, the star was asked for his thoughts on the state of professional wrestling “across the board”, with MJF stating:

“I don’t know if you can say it’s not in a good place when in the history of pro wrestling, this is the most amount of money that’s ever been made off of pro wrestling ever between TV deals and gates.

“I’m a 30-year-old man and I’ve already sold more million-dollar houses than most Hall of Famers. I think wrestling is in a really good place. Now, do I think that much like any sport or platform, there’s a way that it can improve? Absolutely.

“Personally, I’m getting really sick of there’s like a homogenized standard of what good is bell to bell, and I would love to see more styles. It’s like cake batter ice cream. I had cake batter on an almost daily basis, over and over and over again, but eventually, because the flavor was so rich, I kind of got sick of it. And I yearned for the days of vanilla. I couldn’t handle anymore. And I think that’s happened with wrestling.

“It’s a good thing to have options. If there’s one thing I can critique pro wrestling for, while also stating the reason that my rise was so meteoric, is because I gave people that different flavor of ice cream they’ve been yearning for. So that’s my take.”

AEW All In: London on August 30 sees MJF compete in the World Championship Number One Contender Casino Gauntlet, with Andrade El Idolo, Chris Jericho, Mark Davis and Tommaso Ciampa already announced and more names to be confirmed.

The AEW World Championship will be defended by Kenny Omega as he faces Will Ospreay in the main event of the show.

Leveling Criticism At AEW & WWE

During a recent appearance on Sports Media with Richard Deitsch, MJF called upon AEW fans to take a different approach when it comes to critiquing WWE.

Looking at the rise of “WWE sucks” style missives from AEW supporters, MJF suggested that fans should look at why their preferred company is better, saying:

“If you like AEW more than WWE, and there are a lot of people that feel that way, that doesn’t mean you have to sh*t on WWE. You don’t need to make thinkpieces online about why WWE sucks.

“Make thinkpieces about why AEW is better, whatever those logical reasons are. Whether it’s because you get more bang for buck on pay-per-views, because our matches are better, because our rivalries are better, or because MJF is better looking than any top guy in any promotion. There are so many different things, but that doesn’t mean you have to attack the other side. Just put your side over.”

It’s a sound argument to make, in that the focus of what is better shouldn’t be on why something else is worse. There are many upsides to what AEW has to offer, in the same way that there are for WWE.

Focusing exclusive on the competition and its perceived negatives does little to express why the other company is better. Finding those positives and delivering “thinkpieces” on those might just break the cycle.
