How Forbidden Door 2023 Buys Compare With Previous AEW Pay-Per-Views AEW

A new update has emerged on pay-per-view buys for the June 26 AEW X NJPW Forbidden Door crossover event.

Several major matches were advertised ahead of the show, including Kazuchika Okada vs Bryan Danielson, and Kenny Omega vs Will Ospreay for the IWGP US Title.

Per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Forbidden Door should beat Double or Nothing in terms of pay-per-view buys based on buys from Japan.

Explaining the trend of Forbidden Door pay-per-view sales, Meltzer said:

“Forbidden Door grew 15.0 percent in television PPV buys from week one to week two, which is normal levels. Even with the word of mouth of Will Ospreay vs. Kenny Omega it didn’t grow at the level of the MJF vs. Bryan Danielson show.

“The second week buys for Forbidden Door were down 8.4 percent of those from Double or Nothing. For television, it was down 11.4 percent from Double or Nothing at the same 11 days out reporting time.

“But it was up five percent in streaming and five percent growth in streaming is very slightly more than an 11 percent decline in television these days.

“The U.S. number for both shows is going to end up around the same and international will be about the same as well.

“The show should end up beating Double or Nothing based on buys from Japan. Buys are down 7.6 percent from last year’s Forbidden Door on television, but with more buys coming from streaming and less from television, that’s to be expected, and with buys this week that gap will close more.”
