AEW Star Shares Honest Thoughts On Mick Foley Debut

An AEW star has shared their honest thoughts on being up close with Mick Foley when the WWE Hall of Famer made his debut.

Mick Foley made his AEW debut at Double or Nothing Buy In, being on the receiving end of a low blow from MJF during the pre-show, with Darby Allin being on hand to send his opponent running.

Allin would share his thoughts on seeing Foley make his AEW debut during a recent interview with Forbes, reflecting on the influence of the star on his own career after being asked if he considers himself a trailblazer for future stars, saying:

“Time will tell with that one. I really believe time will tell with that one because I helped Mick Foley a couple weeks ago, and he didn’t know he inspired my career so heavily. I’m like, why would you not know?

“And then the thing is, I think about kids years down the road coming, “Hey, dog, I remember watching you when I was six.” So time will tell with that one.

“However, I’d like to think that maybe people were inspired that you don’t have to compromise anything and you can make it on national TV.”

The AEW star would take a deeper look at his experience with Foley, acknowledging that he was able to appreciate it as a fan, stating:

“Yes, you have to stop and smell the roses. You have to because everybody’s so fixated on what’s next to stay relevant. But I do a thing every day where I talk about what I’m grateful for every single day of my life. Along with all my breathwork and meditating, I’m very in the moment.

“So to be in the moment there with Mick Foley, it’s so inspiring because there’s not a lot of guys growing up when I was a kid watching wrestling that I viewed myself like, “Oh, I’d like to hang out with that guy. I see myself being buddies with that guy.” But for some reason, I always saw that with Mick Foley. I don’t know what it was. Maybe it was just the many moments and interviews. He seemed easy to talk to. I don’t get that from a lot of wrestlers.

“So, to be in the ring at Double or Nothing and share that, I’m like, yeah, this is surreal. I didn’t know what he was going to say. I had no idea what he was about to say. So I’m sitting there listening. I’m like, “Oh yeah, that’s right. That’s fun. That’s cool.” He’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.”

Allin heads to All In: London on August 30 to challenge Kevin Knight for the TNT Championship in Falls Count Anywhere match at Wembley Stadium.

The Importance Of The Lasting Legacy

Associated with Sting for a period in AEW, and now interacting with Mick Foley, it’s clear that Darby Allin has respect for the stars who have influenced his career.

It’s also apparent that Tony Khan has the same degree of respect for certain legacy names, bringing them into AEW in a variety of roles since the inception of the company.

Whether it’s Chris Jericho or Mick Foley, Khan is clearly well away of the power of these names, not just as “former WWE stars” but as stars in their own right.

His roster is replete with names familiar to fans of WWE, with more no doubt set to join over the coming years, and it’s an unavoidable consequence of the balancing act between retaining a segment of the fanbase through recognizable names and creating stars of his own by signing independent names.

With many former WWE stars available to him, Khan’s selective approach means he doesn’t sweep up everyone that’s available, just the ones that he can see benefiting his creative vision with limited television time.
