AEW President Tony Khan has shared an update on rules for AEW Unified Championship matches moving forward.
International Champion Kenny Omega and Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada faced off at All In Texas to determine the inaugural AEW Unified Champion.
Following several moments of interference, Okada picked up the victory, winning AEW’s newest championship.
With this bout not fought under Continental Rules – 20 minute time limits and interference strictly prohibited – there has been some uncertainty about the rules surrounding the AEW Unified Title.
Tony Khan confirmed in the post-show media scrum that, with Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada winning the bout, the AEW Unified Championship will be defended under Continental Rules moving forward.
Noting that Don Callis would’ve been fired if Continental Rules would’ve been in place at All In Texas, Khan explained:
“Tonight, we fought a match under the unified rules of AEW, where the referee’s decision was final.
“Now that the title is unified, the Continental Champion won the match, so going forward, the prevailing rules will be the Continental Rules.
“There will never be outside interference again in a Unified Championship match, now that the Continental Rules apply, with the Continental Champion winning.”
