A new biopic is in the works focusing on the life and career of Kavita Devi (real name Kavita Dalal), the first Indian women’s wrestler to compete for WWE.
Per the Times of India, producer Pretty Aggarwal has acquired rights to make the film, and Zeeshan Ahmad will be co-producing.
Discussing the project, Aggarwal said:
“Her whole life has been very inspiring. In every stage of her life, she showed a lot of courage to fight all the odds and proved her ability to win.
“WWE has always been considered as a male bastion. Later, many women from around the world started taking interest in it and professionally started participating in it.
“But still there was no female representation from India. But Kavita Devi proved her mettle and showed that Indian women are no less. She jumped into the WWE ring with all her might.
“Notably, after marriage, she wanted to quit playing, but with her husband’s support she continued playing post her marriage and brought many laurels for India.”
Zeeshan Ahmad confirmed that writing for the project has started, and that it’s too early to be deciding on casting for Kavita Devi.
Kavita Devi made her WWE debut in the 2017 Mae Young Classic tournament. She was eliminated in the first round by current Damage CTRL member Dakota Kai.
Kavita signed with WWE that October, officially starting at the Performance Center in January 2018.
Highlights of her WWE career included her participation in the WrestleMania 34 women’s battle royal, her 2018 Mae Young Classic match against former Divas Champion Kaitlyn, and her battle royal performance at WrestleMania Axxess 2019 Worlds Collide.
WWE released Kavita in May 2021. She later stated that she had returned to India that January to be with her husband who was recovering from COVID-19, and chose not to return to the US.
WWE recently held two major international premium live events, with Backlash 2023 airing from Puerto Rico on May 7, and the May 27 Night of Champions event emanating from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
