Cody Apologises For Accidentally Participating In Homophobic “Puto” Chant

AEW Vice President Cody has apologised after accidentally participating in a homophobic chant at the recent AAA Triplemania show last month.

AAA star Psycho Clown and former UFC Champion Cain Velasquez started to chant “puto”, and Cody, seemingly just trying to play to the crowd, joined in without actually knowing what he was saying.

“Puto” is apparently homophobic slang used in Mexico, particularly at football matches, and means “male prostitute”. It is seen as an insult in Mexico, as it is reportedly a slur against homosexual men.

An AEW spokesperson supplied the following statement to OutSports:

“Cody joined his teammates at AAA TripleMania for what he understood to be their post-match tradition in Mexico and was unaware of any negative connotations. Certainly the last thing Cody would want to do is to hurt or offend anyone, anywhere.”

Numerous organisations have banned the use of the word, with two recent football matches being suspended due to it being used.

Fifa (football’s governing body) guidelines state:

“Referees would first stop the match and request a public announcement to insist that the discriminatory behavior cease. If this has no effect, he or she can then suspend play again and, if the racist, behavior persists, abandon the match.”

AEW included a clip of Cody joining in with the chant in their recent “Road to All Out” video.

It’s fair to say that Cody was almost certainly unaware of what he was chanting along to.
