A current World Champion has today set an impressive new record.
Back in 2021, the IWGP Heavyweight Championship was retired, when it was merged with the IWGP Intercontinental Championship by Kota Ibushi, creating the new IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
The new lineage which began in 2021 saw Shingo Takagi as the longest reigning champion at 211 days, but that is no longer the case.
With today now being November 6 in Japan, current champion SANADA is now officially the longest reigning IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.
SANADA captured the title from Kazuchika Okada back on April 8 at NJPW Sakura Genesis, and he has defended his title against Hiromu Takahashi, Yota Tsuji, Jack Perry and EVIL during his 212 day reign.
His next defence of the title will come at Wrestle Kingdom 18 on January 4, 2024 against former Los Ingobernables de Japon stablemate Tetsuya Naito.
A recent big angle in NJPW has led to speculation that the Intercontinental Championship could be set to make a return, which you can see here.
A huge Bryan Danielson match has now been made official for Wrestle Kingdom 18, which you can see here.
