The return of CM Punk on new FS1 show WWE Backstage late on Tuesday evening had the whole wrestling world talking. Obviously.
Many people were stunned that Punk had made his long-awaited WWE return almost six years after walking out in 2014, on a little-watched late night show on FS1.
Just as shocked as the rest of the wrestling world were most of the people he shared the stage with on Backstage, as revealed in this FOX exclusive behind the scenes video:
In the video, Renee Young admits she has been lying to people for weeks about Punk, having clearly been aware that he was coming back, but the rest of the crew had been left in the dark.
“That was f—–g awesome” said Paige, who revealed she had no idea that Punk was returning but that it was a great end to the show.
Samoa Joe, who had legendary rivalries with Punk on the indie circuit, said Punk’s return was the way it should have been: “real quiet, real sneaky, real devious” and that it was “awesome to have him back.”
Booker T was similarly positive. “I’m sure the fans who have been wishing to see more of CM Punk are happy” he reckoned. Well, maybe not everyone, Booker.
Speculation continues to mount that the timing of Punk’s return is to coincide with Survivor Series taking place in Chicago in little over a week’s time, and that Punk will make an appearance on that show.
That is purely speculation at this point but if WWE wants to avoid a show filled with disruptive CM Punk chants then it should do everything it can to convince Punk to show his face in front of the crowd that night.
