WWE star Finn Balor has shared his honest thoughts on his Universal Championship reign, which was cut short due to injury.

It felt like WWE strapped a rocket to Finn Balor’s back in the summer of 2016, with Balor pinning Roman Reigns on his first episode of Raw post-NXT call-up to earn his way into the match to determine the first-ever Universal Champion.

Balor pinned Seth Rollins to become the inaugural champion on August 21, 2016, but suffered a shoulder injury during the match which resulted in him relinquishing the gold on the following night’s Raw episode.

Speaking with Stephanie McMahon on the What’s Your Story? podcast, Finn Balor opened up about his in-ring career.

Touching on his Universal Title reign, Balor said:

“Really, once I won the Universal Title that one time, for me that was the top of the mountain. I know a lot of people say ‘What if he didn’t get hurt?’ That’s the highest you can get.

“A lot of people say ‘He got hurt and relinquished the title, that’s a tragedy,’ but for me it’s a success story.”

Finn Balor’s mindset makes sense in the sense that the company put a lot of trust in him early on as what was essentially the world champion for WWE Raw immediately following the re-introduction of the brand split.

While Balor says he feels his Universal Title win was a success story, many fan of his would love to see him hold a world title again in WWE, giving him the opportunity to defend the gold.
