GUNTHER has addressed his enjoyment in drawing negative reactions from the WWE crowd after retiring John Cena at last year’s Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
“The Ring General” has been one of WWE’s few top heel figures to not yet venture over to the babyface side of the roster during his tenure in the company, and considering he’s retired John Cena and AJ Styles – two beloved WWE legends – within the past six months, the possibility of GUNTHER turning feels like a massive improbability any time soon.
Speaking with Enry Lazza, GUNTHER agreed that being hated by fans for retiring Cena is a sign that he’s doing his job well, and while he personally embraces the hate from the crowd, he said others in the locker room do “struggle” with that aspect of the job:
“It is and I feel like it’s a struggle that a lot of my colleagues sometimes have, when they struggle to get negative reactions, because it cannot feel nice, but I enjoy it, I have to say.
“I like to be the one that creates chaos and stirs the pot and that worked out really well with John (Cena).”

While there had been speculation that GUNTHER would be looking to continue his “Career Killer” run by targeting Brock Lesnar or Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42, he instead challenged, and eventually defeated, Seth Rollins at “The Grandest Stage Of Them All.”
By helping Paul Heyman with his Seth Rollins problem, GUNTHER was owed a favor from “The Oracle” which has since been revealed to be a shot at Cody Rhodes Undisputed WWE Championship at WWE Clash in Italy on May 31.
A First Undisputed WWE Championship Reign In Sight For GUNTHER
While his pursuit of ending the careers of legendary WWE stars has take precedence for the past six months, GUNTHER targeting Cody Rhodes will bring him closer to holding gold in WWE once again – something he has done for a majority of his career in the company thus far.
Whether it be his 870 day WWE NXT UK Title run, 666 days as Intercontinental Champion or combined 303 days as World Heavyweight Champion across two reigns – it has been a peculiar sight seeing the Austrian without gold around his waist for so long.
GUNTHER has lost his only other singles meeting with Cody Rhodes in WWE – their Men’s Crown Jewel Championship Match at WWE Crown Jewel 2024 – but “The Ring General” may smell blood in the water this time around given Cody’s recent eye injury, which he was only cleared to return from two weeks ago.
With a Randy Orton return also a possibility in the near future, we may see GUNTHER once again fall short against Rhodes, or much like Cody dud with Drew McIntyre, the pair could trade the WWE Title back-and-forth before “The Viper” inevitably seeks to resume his feud with his former protégé.
