Injury Update On Kofi Kingston Ahead Of WWE Extreme Rules

This week’s Raw and Smackdown was the first time in seven weeks (since May 14th edition of Smackdown) where WWE Champion Kofi Kingston has not wrestled on either episode of WWE TV in a week.

The ‘streak’ was only broken because the New Day member is suffering from an injury. Dave Meltzer claimed on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that Kingston injured his back on Sunday during a house show match with former rival Dolph Ziggler:

“Kofi’s got a bad back… I just heard he got hurt at the house show in a match with Dolph Ziggler. That’s why he didn’t wrestle Monday or Tuesday. He got hurt on Sunday.”

Seven days after hurting his back, Kofi Kingston is slated to defend his WWE Championship against Raw Superstar Samoa Joe at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view event this coming Sunday.

It was rumoured that the encounter would be made into a ladder match after hints were dropped by Corey Graves on TV. However, nothing has been confirmed by WWE with just three days until the pay-per-view.

With regards to his injury, Mike Johnson of PWInsider has added that it is believed that Kofi will be fine to work with Joe on Sunday’s pay-per-view event.

“The belief is that he will be OK to perform on Sunday’s Extreme Rules PPV.”

Kofi Kingston has been ever-present for WWE thus far in 2019. The man who beat Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 has performed in 38 TV matches on the main roster this year, winning 79% of them.

It is great to hear that Kofi Kingston will likely be fine to work on Sunday, and his match with Samoa Joe is more than likely not in jeopardy of being changed.

This comes after WWE has already had to change plans for one of the championship matches booked for this weekend’s show as a result of one of the performers dealing with a nasty sinus infection.
