AEW/NJPW
Top NJPW star and NEVER Openweight Champion Shingo Takagi wants to face a new challenge from AEW after beating Trent Beretta.
At NJPW Lonestar Shootout, Shingo Takagi defeated AEW’s Trent Beretta to retain the NEVER Openweight Championship in the main event.
Despite this match, Takagi has had very sporadic appearance against AEW stars with his only two proper appearances being at the first two AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door events.
Speaking to Tokyo Sports, Shingo Takagi commented on his future as NEVER Openweight Champion. He said:
“I want to take full advantage of NEVER’s unopposed division.”
“This year, Hiromu (Takahashi) has participated in various events with other organizations, but I want to do what I can only do now with all my heart.”
“I want to show my strength against other organizations and overseas. I’m willing to have a title match in the U.S. if necessary.”
“I won against Trent Beretta, so I want them to bring someone better from AEW,”
Shingo Takagi is set to defend the NEVER Openweight Championship against Tama Tonga on January 4 at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18.
Shingo will then go on to appear at the NJPW Battle In The Valley event later this month.
