At SummerSlam in August, Finn Balor was defeated Bray Wyatt who was debuting his Fiend character. After the match, Balor was not seen on WWE TV for a number of weeks.
On the 10/2 episode of NXT TV, Finn Balor emphatically made his return to WWE by announcing that he was once again part of the black and gold brand.
Following the return, Finn Balor made one of the best heel turns in recent memory and looks set for a feud with NXT icon Johnny Gargano.
However, it is being reported by Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE originally planned on having Balor return on Smackdown instead of NXT:
“When he lost to Wyatt badly, the idea was he’d go on his sabbatical and switch to SmackDown on his return, but then when the ratings ended up going the way they did, he was moved to NXT with the idea that his star power could make more of a difference there”.
Moving Balor to NXT was certainly the right choice for WWE to make. Since returning from injury after WrestleMania 33, Finn Balor had done very little of note on the main roster.
A move back to NXT and a heel turn seems like it will do wonders for the career of the immensely talented former Universal and NXT Champion.
