An update has emerged on plans for the New Day members Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods following their recent departure from WWE.

Kingston and Woods left WWE in April after the company had come to them asking them to take a significant pay cut mid-contract, which they refused to do, instead opting to exit WWE entirely.

There was talk that WWE was hoping to sign Woods to some kind of alternative deal to keep him on board for video game projects and his UpUpDownDown channel – similar to Tyler Breeze’s contract – but there’s been no word on if that’s actually happening.

The duo have been making convention appearances under the names Kofi, which is Kofi Kingston’s real first name, and Austin Creed, which is the name Xavier Woods used before joining WWE, as well as on UpUpDownDown.

In something of an update, their former New Day teammate Big E spoke to Kayla Becker, formerly known as Kayla Braxton in WWE, in an interview on BZZR.

E shared that he believes Kingston and Woods are not retired, and will be returning to wrestling a chip on their shoulders.

Asked about how Kingston and Woods have been doing and discussing what’s next for them, E said:

“They’re doing well. I want, in due time – I know they’re kind of staying low and enjoying family time right now – I want them to be able to tell their story. But obviously we’ve had a lot of discussions lately about what’s next.

“I don’t expect those guys to be retiring. I think they still have a lot more to show.

“I think we had a really impactful heel turn and the follow up wasn’t exactly how we envisioned it. But I think those guys have so much to offer, they’re so, so talented.

“I think they’re going to go out there, wherever they end up wrestling, with a big chip on their shoulders and something to prove. I’m excited for them.

“Those guys will always be my brothers. I think the bond that we built, for me, in many ways, was so much bigger than wrestling.

“Those guys are family. Those guys are always gonna be a part of my life, we’re always going to find ways to stay in touch, to get together.

“So yeah, I’m excited for what’s next for them.”

New Day Potentially Joining AEW

The big expectation is that Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods will be going to AEW after their WWE exit, which would set up dream matches against the likes of the Young Bucks, Adam Copeland & Christian Cage, FTR and the Hurt Syndicate.

It could prove to be a major boost for the AEW tag team division, which has taken a bit of a hit with the absence of FTR recently, as well as other teams being out like Private Party, and former champions the Hurt Syndicate not really being in the mix recently.

There is of course also potential for former WWE Champion Kingston and 2021 King of the Ring winner Woods to get a bigger singles spotlight than they’ve had in WWE in recent years, but the likelihood is they’ll be coming in as a tag team for some of those aforementioned dream matches.
