The planned opponent for Ric Flair’s return match has been revealed.
As previously mentioned, Ric Flair will make his in-ring wrestling return on July 31 during Starrcast weekend in Nashville, Tennessee.
According to Fightful Select (subscription required), WWE Hall of Famer Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat is coming out of retirement to compete against his former rival at the Jim Crockett Promotions event.
Dave Meltzer previously reported that the plan was for Flair to team with FTR to face the Rock N’ Roll Express and someone else. This new report confirms the “someone else” is Steamboat.
This will mark Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat’s first match since a 2010 FCW tag team match with his son against Caylen Croft and Trent Baretta.
The 73-year old Flair and 69-year old Steamboat have worked with or against each other nearly 300 times across six decades with this upcoming match. Their last match was in 1994 for WCW.
The report confirms that the match has not been finalized, but it’s been in the plans for Starrcast for several weeks and Steamboat met with Conrad Thompson in person.
One of the angles for the Starrcast event was to help provide both legends with memorable final matches since neither man likely expected what was their last match to be so.
We will have further details and updates on Ric Flair, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and the Starrcast event when they become available.
