TNA Wrestling’s Santino Marella has recalled the backstage reaction to his WWE in-ring return on NXT earlier this year.

Marella challenged for Ethan Page’s North American Championship on the July 29 NXT episode, with Page ultimately retaining his gold.

This marked Santino Marella’s first time in a WWE ring since his appearance in the 2020 women’s Royal Rumble match as Santina Marella, and his first one-on-one match with the company since facing Rusev on the June 17, 2014 edition of Main Event.

Speaking with Rewind Recap Relive, Marella discussed Shawn Michaels’ reaction to the bout, noting:

“The cool thing was when I came through the curtain, I was met by Shawn and Matt, they were shaking their heads like “What the hell, you just kept up!’

“I’m 51 years old and they have a pretty fast pace over there at NXT, and I pushed myself. I kept up and everyone was pretty impressed that I can still go, so to speak.

“It was a good match, I didn’t win, but I showed that I can still hang, that’s kind of a win in itself.”
