WWE Champion Cody Rhodes Not Medically Cleared After ‘Severe’ WrestleMania 42 Injury, Eye ‘Still Completely Shut’ WWE

WWE has provided an update on Cody Rhodes and his injury after last night’s WrestleMania 42 night one main event.

Rhodes retained his Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton, but suffered an eye injury during the course of the match that led to his left eye being swollen shut.

On tonight’s pre-show for Mania night two, Jackie Redmond provided an update, stating that Rhodes is currently not medically cleared to wrestle after that match.

She also noted his eye is still swollen shut, saying:

“I can confirm that Cody Rhodes is not medically cleared and after speaking to medical staff I can tell you the damage from that main event was severe.

“Afterwards Cody Rhodes needed three sutures to the face and four staples to the back of the head. As for the punt that you just showed from Randy Orton, the impact to Cody’s orbital socket was so severe that his eye is still completely shut.

“So again, Cody Rhodes (is) not medically cleared and his timetable for return, as of today, is up in the air.”

What Happens To The WWE Championship With Cody Rhodes Injured

With Cody Rhodes retaining the Undisputed WWE Title at WrestleMania, there may now be question marks over the title due to his injury.

Ultimately, it decides how long he’s going to be out for – if it’s long enough, WWE may need to vacate the title and crown a new champion in his absence.

Alternatively, there could be an interim champion crowned, leading to a match between that person and Rhodes to determine the ‘real’ champion when he’s back – a role that could be perfect for Randy Orton to set up a rematch. Though having said that, there were rumors of Orton dealing with injury issues heading into the match, so he might be set for time off as well.

Or, if he won’t be out too long, none of that would be necessary.

WWE has no hard rules in this situation and can essentially just decide how they want to play it out.
