It has emerged that WWE has filed for a new Randy Orton related trademark with the United States Patent & Trademark Office.

Orton has been away from WWE TV since he lost the main event of WrestleMania 42 night one against Cody Rhodes and attacked Rhodes after the match.

Plans called for a tag team match at Backlash with Orton and Pat McAfee teaming up against Rhodes and Jelly Roll, but that obviously didn’t end up happening.

Other than briefly playing off reports that he’s out due to injury issues, Orton has remained quiet throughout his absence and could seemingly return at any time.

In the meantime, WWE today filed a new trademark for ‘RKO’ with the following description:

Wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network

This doesn’t appear to signify anything particularly big and it seems like it’s just a routine filing.

WWE does already have a number of trademarks registered from previous years for the term RKO with different descriptions.

How Should Randy Orton Return To WWE?

The ending of WrestleMania 42 night one suggested that the Randy Orton vs Cody Rhodes feud would continue, and while the aforementioned WWE Backlash tag team match didn’t end up happening, it does now feel like a loose end that needs tying up.

However, Rhodes is very occupied right now with the newly returned and new WWE Champion CM Punk, as well as Sami Zayn and GUNTHER who are players in that story as well.

It feels a big congested for Orton to get involved in that scene at the moment, and it would also leave things a bit lopsided with main eventers on SmackDown, which features all of those names in addition to Drew McIntyre when he returns, compared to the Raw main event scene that consists of an often absent Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Oba Femi and not really anyone else as things stand.

With that in mind, it might be best for Orton to return on the WWE Raw roster so he can avoid Rhodes entirely for the time being before circling back around to it in the future when they do eventually cross paths again.
