CM Punk has won the Undisputed WWE Championship on tonight’s July 6 edition of Raw emanating from his hometown of Chicago.

Tonight’s Raw opened with the arrival of Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn with his title belt, when he met his scheduled challenger for tonight, Cody Rhodes, backstage.

However, as they came face to face, GUNTHER attacked Rhodes from behind, and throughout the show it was gradually announced that Rhodes was injured due to the attack and wouldn’t be able to challenge Zayn.

Rather than Zayn not defending his title, it was confirmed that he would be putting it on the line after all – it just wasn’t said who he’d be against.

Adam Pearce was shown making frantic phone calls, but Nick Aldis informed him that he’d found someone, which clearly annoyed Pearce as he’d lost the game of one-upsmanship between the two General Managers.

Ultimately, the replacement for Rhodes ended up being CM Punk – making his first appearance since WrestleMania 42 in April – as revealed only after Zayn had made his entrance for the match.

Despite Zayn landing two Go To Sleeps and two Blue Thunder Bombs throughout the match, it was Punk who scored the win after a Helluva Kick and GTS of his own.

This marks Punk’s eighth WWE world title win and makes him the sixth man to hold the current version of the Undisputed WWE Title after Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes three times, John Cena, Drew McIntyre and Zayn.

Zayn held the title for just nine days after he won it at Night of Champions in a three-way against GUNTHER and then-champion Rhodes.

As noted, Punk had been away from WWE TV since WrestleMania, where he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns.

Since he is now Undisputed WWE Champion, despite tonight’s title change taking place on Raw because it happened to be in Chicago, this likely means Punk will regularly be on SmackDown moving forward.

There was another title change earlier tonight as The Vision’s Austin Theory and Bron Breakker regained the World Tag Team Title with some help from Maxxine Dupri.
