Roman Reigns is now a seven-time WWE World Champion, defeating CM Punk in the main event of WrestleMania 42.
After a match that went almost 35 minutes bell to bell, it was Reigns who scored the win, following up one Spear with another to score the pin.
This brings an end to Punk’s reign that began at the start of November, when he defeated Jey Uso after Seth Rollins had vacated the title.
It’s Reigns’ first title reign since the end of his legendary 1,316 day reign as Undisputed WWE Champion that was ended by Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 40.
Reigns celebrated with his family at ringside after the match.
Roman Reigns Reclaims His Spot At The Top Of WWE
By Dave Adamson
The OTC is once again at the head of the table with Roman Reigns beating CM Punk in the WWE WrestleMania 42 Night 2 main event with Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas coming unglued for the moment that Reigns captured the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career, casting aside any doubt that he would be leaving the company.
A war of words that saw Roman Reigns declare he “doesn’t belong in WWE anymore” if he loses at WrestleMania 42, it now appears the star has reclaimed his spot, defeating CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Roman Reigns as WWE World Heavyweight Champion opens up a new era for the title that was introduced in April 2023, particularly given the dominant and show-stealing performances that The OTC has previously demonstrated when in possession of a championship. The thorny issue of his status remains, however, with Reigns being a part-time champion a world of full-time stars.
As recently reported, Reigns still remains under contract with WWE after WrestleMania 42, despite previous rumors that his current deal comes to an end after this year’s Premium Live Event.
It’s unlikely that we’ll suddenly see Reigns defending the title on a regular basis on WWE television, given his limited appearance lifestyle, although this continues the trend set by CM Punk who only managed a handful of World Heavyweight Championship defenses since defeating Jey Uso for the vacant title last November.
In under two years, we’ve come a long way from the “workhorse” status of the title during Seth Rollins’ first reign.
