Former WWE Star Teases Future CM Punk Match

A former WWE star has teased a future match against CM Punk after recently reuniting with him at an untelevised event in Calgary, Alberta.

The WWE Summer Tour rolled into Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on August 23 and saw CM Punk team with Cody Rhodes in a victory over GUNTHER and Ricky Saints.

Also in attendance at the show was Davey Boy Smith, Jr, catching up with “some old friends” backstage at the show.

In a post shared on Twitter, Smith Jr reflected on the experience and catching up with CM Punk, sharing a photo with the Undisputed WWE Champion, and teasing a future match, posting:

“Was really great seeing some old friends from the past tonight backstage at WWE Live Event in home city of Calgary AB Canada!!! I had been on both same side and opposite teams with @CMPunk in the past.

“One day that might happen again…you never know…. 🇨🇦 🤼‍♂️ 🔥”

CM Punk teamed with Smith Jr and Tyson Kidd (known as The Hart Foundation) back in August 2009 in a loss to The Hardys & John Morrison on SmackDown.

In January of the following year, Punk and Luke Gallows would be victorious in their United WWE Tag Team Championship Number One Contenders Fatal Four Way, defeating The Hart Dynasty, Cryme Tyme (JTG & Shad) and Matt Hardy & The Great Khali.

Their final televised match together would see Punk team with Darren Young and Luke Gallows in a losing effort to Rey Mysterio & The Hart Dynasty.

With The Hart Dynasty as Unified WWE Tag Team Champions, Smith Jr & Kidd would face Punk & Gallows three more times at SmackDown house shows.

Smith Jr would be released from his WWE contract in August 2011, heading to the independent circuit and to a successful tour of New Japan Pro-Wrestling in the subsequent years.

A return to WWE in 2020 would see the star sign a new contract the following year but be released in November the following year without returning to television.

Could it be third time lucky for the son of British Bulldog when it comes to a WWE run? A WWE Tag Team Champion and the last World Tag Team Champion, the 41-year-old star continues to compete on the independent wrestling scene, with tours of NJPW, All Japan Pro-Wrestling and MLW in the record books.

There was clearly interest in the star’s services given his re-signing in 2021 following a dark match on SmackDown, with Smith revealing the scrapped plans that would have seen him introduced as “The Stampede Stud”. He would also confirm that catching COVID-19 saw him “out of commision” for a number of weeks, leading to his eventual release.

Being over forty isn’t a barrier to becoming a WWE star, with Smith clearly having all the tools in his arsenal to affect a return to the promotion, having amassed championships across the international independent scene.
