WWE Name Claims ‘Nobody Gave a S**t’ About Dustin Rhodes AEW

A WWE name has claimed that “nobody gave a s**t about Dustin Rhodes” whilst discussing the reaction to taking away “everything emotional”.

WWE executive Bruce Prichard looked back at the legacy of Dustin Rhodes in the company, particularly as Goldust in 1995.

Speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, Prichard revealed his thoughts on the character and Rhodes’ belief in it, saying:

“I knew Dustin wanted to do this, and felt very strongly that there were real feelings and emotions about the Goldust character and Dusty.

I just felt that the reason Goldust was Goldust, was because it was a persona Dustin could put on and be someone else.

“I think he was better at portraying a character than he was as The Natural.”

‘The Natural’ was Dustin Rhodes’ character in WCW during his early 90s run which would lead to him becoming WCW United States Heavyweight Champion.

When Rhodes joined WWE in 1995 for his second run with the company, he would introduce the wrestling world to the character of “The Bizarre One” Goldust.

Speaking on this character further, Prichard said:

“That Goldust character was so rich, flamboyant, and all-consuming.”

Prichard would then compare Goldust to the man portraying the character, adding:

“When you take it off of him, he becomes a normal guy. He wasn’t interesting, right off the bat, in my opinion.”

He would go on to discuss the issue of Dustin Rhodes portraying a character closer to himself, stating:

“I thought Dustin had come so far in the character work he had done, that when you stripped all that away, all of a sudden, he was a regular guy.

“I don’t think people paid money to see a regular guy next door.”

Having confirmed that he wasn’t a fan of “taking Goldust out of the Goldust character”, Prichard went on to say:

“Nobody gave a s**t about Dustin Rhodes. They only gave a s**t about Goldust.

“We stripped him of that, and everything that the audience had an emotional attachment to.

“It’s hard to talk about because I f**king loved Dustin Rhodes, I thought he was one of the most talented talents I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with.

“But when you take a flamboyant character like Goldust and strip it all away, and you make someone a boring husband, I’m not watching TV, and I’m not watching WWE to see a boring husband with a kid who goes on TV and says, ‘My daddy was mean to me. We didn’t get along’.”

He would conclude by suggesting that if Dusty Rhodes had still been with WWE at the time, there would have been a potential story there.

Prichard did, however, concede that “WWE fans didn’t what WCW” and “didn’t care” that Dusty was Dustin’s father.
