WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long has detailed the origins of his famous dance, and how he first did it for his grandson.
During his time as WWE SmackDown General Manager during the Ruthless Aggression Era, Teddy Long would carve out an iconic career still looked back on fondly by fans to this day.
Part of Long’s charm came from his signature dance move he would hit on television, which he continues to do even during his sporadic appearances to this day.
Teddy Long First Did His Dance For His Grandson
Speaking on TMZ’s Inside the Ring, Teddy detailed the origins of the dance, and how he originally did it for his grandson, who would bop up and down in his walker when watching the show with Long.
Vince McMahon liked the dance after Long did it for his grandson, and wanted him to do it every week.
He said:
“Back when I first started as General Manager of SmackDown, we were taping SmackDown on Tuesday nights and it wouldn’t air until Friday night.
“Well every Friday night I would be able to be back home, so what I would do is I would sit my grandson, then he was 3 or 4 years old, but we bought a walker and we put him in this walker because we were trying to learn him how to walk.
“So every time he would get in that walker and I would come home, we’d look at the show together, he’d just start bopping, doing (the dance) in the walker right there.
“I thought about is, so one night I went to TV and they played my music, I was thinking about him at home. I said ‘I’m gonna do this dance for him’, so I start doing the dance on TV because I was thinking about my grandson.
“Well, after that night, the next week I walked out, I got ready to walk out, Vince is screaming at me ‘do that dance!’ I’m like ‘what dance?’ and he gets up and he starts doing it, and that’s how the dance started.”

Is Teddy Long WWE’s Best Authority Figure?
WWE has had a number of authority figures on television over the years, from the days of Jack Tunney all the way to today with Adam Pearce, Nick Aldis, Robert Stone and Rey Mysterio calling the shots.
Of all the authority figures in WWE history, Teddy Long had the longest tenure as a General Manager in the company’s history outside of Vince McMahon himself and other members of the McMahon family.
With fans still holding Long in high regard, including his dance move, making tag team matches and booking wrestlers to go one on one with the Undertaker on SmackDown, he could certainly be considered among the greatest authority figures in company history.
