WWE Matches Of The Week #4

SmackDown Live
Daniel Bryan vs. Jeff Hardy

As some of you may know, I’ve never been a fan of Jeff Hardy. That said, the fact that he faced off against Daniel Bryan in 2018 got me pumped. These two had a great TV match that actually made it all the way to the end without a run-in. Hooray!

Bryan looked strong and really set himself up as a threat to Samoa Joe – who he’ll face next week in a Money In The Bank qualifier match. You could really see how Bryan has altered his in-ring style in a brilliant way to accommodate his prior injuries… until he and Jeff just gave up caring and starting hurling themselves at each other.

Now normally I would just focus on the bell-to-bell for these lists, but the Bryan/Joe stare down at the end gave me legitimate goosebumps. No doubt that’ll be in this spot next week.

205 Live
Drew Gulak vs. Gran Metalik

Before we get started, I know this bout wasn’t up there with the greatest 205 Live matches of the year. Compared to a lot of the weekly main roster matchups, however, it was definitely a standout.

Gulak has really come into his own and works with opposing styles so well, it’s incredible. He spent so much of this match grounding his high-flying opponent without ever entering the dreaded rest hold zone – *cough* Reigns vs. Joe *cough*. He’s vicious in between the ropes and really looks like he’s dissecting his foes.

Gran Metalik was amazing as ever. It’s a shame we don’t get to see him in singles competition more often because he really can go with the best of them. He’s powerful yet graceful and not a botch-fest like Sin Cara. Metalik also manages to remain unique, even in his luchador surroundings, thanks to his rope walking gimmick. It was also great to hear Nigel McGuiness on commentary complaining about him not just walking over to Gulak and kicking him in the face.
