WWE has announced another new television project that they working on, this time with the streaming service Netflix.
During the November 2 conference call reporting their 2022 third-quarter earnings, WWE revealed that it will be acting as executive producer on an upcoming Spanish-language series with Netflix.
The show, Contra Las Cuerdas (Against the Ropes), is billed as a comedy series about a female professional wrestler and is scheduled to debut in 2023.
This announcement is the third show announced by WWE to be in pipeline.
It was previously announced that a new series with Hulu starring Raw’s Bianca Belair and Montez Ford is currently in production.
WWE’s co-CEO Nick Khan also announced during the earnings call that WWE is launching a talent search in Africa. The search will begin as early as next week, kicking off in Nigeria.
Several updates concerning WWE’s streaming partnerships have also emerged recently.
WWE announced that the streaming service Showmax will be the home of the WWE Network in sub-Saharan Africa in an extension to their partnership with MultiChoice.
Further, it was revealed on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE has negotiated an extension with Hulu for a further year.
Hulu’s WWE content currently includes Main Event, Total Divas and Total Bellas in addition to delayed versions of Raw, SmackDown, NXT.
Previously it was speculated that WWE intended to move all content to NBC Peacock, which has been the home of the WWE Network in the US since March 2021.
This is not the first time WWE has collaborated with Netflix. The streaming service has been working on a documentary series on former WWE CEO Vince McMahon for the last two years.
The timeline of production pre-dates the hush-money scandal story that was broken by the Wall Street Journal and led to McMahon stepping down in June 2022 and his retirement in July 2022.
There is no confirmed date for when the Netflix docuseries will air, but as of the last word, it is still planned to go ahead.
